The First Annual Howard Littlefield Boosterism Award for Economic Forecasting

This is the first Howard Littlefield Boosterism award, to be awarded annually to a local booster for putting the con in economics, earning the title of local haruspex.

The keynote of the award can be found in the immortal phrase of the Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman, from his book Money Mischief: "Never underestimate the role of luck in the fate of individuals or of nations." These words describe the keystone of all formal economic activity, from humble augury by local soothsayers to the arcane ceremonies of that band of wizards called the Federal Reserve Board who have repeatedly shown the utter futility of their actions outside the smoothing power of good fortune. Now as Alan Greespan retires, feted as a firm guiding hand on the economy, no one points out that his ride during this long tenure has been the white-knuckled grip of fear on a runaway train over which he had no control.

This year the award goes to Austin Texan Angelos Angelou. His arithmetical haruspications on local growth, after appropriately timed revision, proved highly accurate over the last several years. Long live boosterism.

We are open for nominations for 2007 for a local booster who best puts the con in economics. Though it isn't the Nobel Prize for that noble superstition called economics, it is no less meaningless. We would love to give Friedman a prize for backward prognostication, a much safer course since his goofy what-if games with phantasmagorical statistical analyses are impossible to corroborate, the future having chosen a path not to his liking. But he already has a meaningless prize for meaningless work.
