Commentary on 2 Kings 2:23-25

Brothers in the faith, Lord and Master Christ Jesus founded our movement in fulfillment of prophecy written in sacred texts He so carefully inspired and preserved for us his chosen people in these last days. And yet we hear the Papist charlatans raising their voices in unison with the chorus of "higher critics" of His great work, admonishing their flock of misguided pagan descendents and devil worshippers that God's Truth is not literal truth, that they are not to take the Bible at face value.

Today I am calling out these followers of demons and false gods to show them that the whole word of God is literally true and applicable directly to our daily lives. In fact, it is the ONLY work necessary for man to live by. All other books can be burned, should be burned, unnecessary distractions from Sacred Truth, puffing men up with pride in their feeble ability to understand what is completely explained in His Sacred Work.

The project begun here today takes scripture shunned by those too embarrassed to cite or quote and builds sermons around it. Nothing in the sacred Word of our holy Father can be cause for embarrassment, and those who find it so are not worthy of the word Christian or of his salvation.

Today we read 2 Kings 2:23-25.

Elisha has just succeeded Elijah, cloaking himself in the mantle that fell from Elijah as the Lord carried him away in a fiery chariot. On departing Jericho, where he performed the miracle of curing their source water, passing by Bethel he is accosted by some children.

We read from verses 23 on:

"He went up from there to Bethel, and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, 'Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead.' And he turned around, and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys. From there he went on to Mount Carmel, and thence he returned to Samaria."

A stronger translation would say that Elisha called down evil upon the brats in the name of Jehovah, and that two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the children to pieces.

And so what are we to make of this? Is God too harsh? Is this the act of an irrational God?

Some would have you believe that this is the act of a fictious God, a mad irrational God. Some would say that God killed these children for their own good, or for some greater good, since only God can see the whole cycle of causality, the ends and the means ad infinitum in a single instant. Their God stands outside time and outside morality.

I agree God stands outside time, but not outside morality. God is morality. And though God need not justify actions to humans, God does so out of goodness and love. How can this be justified?

One explanation would have us believe that God punished these delinquents for their disrespect of an adult, but the idea of feeding children and teenagers to bears for disrespect of adults, though appealing and fitting, does not conform to the laws God gave the Jewish nation.

Another more compelling explanation is that God punished these youth for attacking and taunting and disrespecting one of his chosen prophets. That this would indeed be fitting punishment for such a crime is hard to dispute, but again there is no scriptural pattern to fit this explanation. Those who persecuted and killed and disrespected his prophets were slaughtered in all sorts of manners not including bears; Ahab's wife Jezebel's corpse got eaten by dogs.

No, the only explanation consistent with the whole of the sacred Bible is that God has reserved this special punishment, being eaten by she-bears, for those who disrespect his bald prophets by taunting them for their baldness. The only question is whether this rule applies beyond the scope of adolescents to adults as well. There seems no definitive answer to this question within the revealed Truth. Perhaps we will learn It when God reveals Himself in the coming Rapture.

But brothers, take care who you taunt for his baldness. He may be a prophet of the Lord. Could it be Timothy Treadwell did not, well, tread well? Or carefully? That is to say, brothers and sisters, that perhaps there is a deeper explanation for his being eaten by bears.
